Our First Strawberry Picking at Smith’s Nursery

“Try something new each day. After all, we’re given life to find it out. It doesn’t last forever.” – Ruth Gordon

Hey everyone! I just wanted to drop in and tell you about our first visit to a strawberry patch! Many of you may have gone berry or apple picking lots of times, but surprisingly we’ve never done anything like that before. I know, we’re so late in the game, right?

With the weather warming up, it’s a perfect time of the year to get outdoors and do some fun activities. So, we went on a little trip with Tristan to Smith’s Nursery for some strawberry picking.

Smith’s Nursery

Smith’s Nursery is a family owned and operated farm in Benson, North Carolina. Not only do they grow strawberries, but they also grow and sale blueberries, shrubs and other plants for landscaping.

They also have three greenhouses growing a large variety of tomatoes, and in the fall, you can visit their pumpkin patch and do a hay ride. And don’t forget to try their ice cream, it’s a big hit with the locals and tourists!

Remember, they are a farm so you can see the cutest animals like chickens, donkey, goats, pigs and there is a pond. Tristan was so excited when he saw the huge catfish and turtles taking a swim!

Strawberry Picking

We had never been to a strawberry patch nor have we ever picked strawberries, so it was a fun experience and opportunity for us to try something new.

Before we started, we were told about how strawberries grow and when to pick them. I honestly can’t remember all the details and I don’t want to give you the wrong information. However, I do know that once they start growing they are green – not red.

So, if you go strawberry picking, do not pick the green ones or any with traces of green because it means they are not ready to be picked. Also, you don’t want to eat those because they will not taste great!

The cost is $2.75 per pound and you can use their yellow buckets for the picking. Tristan used a small basket.

The strawberries were so huge! So much better than what we normally buy at the grocery store. It was so cool being able to just wander through the rows of strawberries and pick them fresh off the plant.

A Tastefully New Experience

I think one of the most rewarding parts of it was coming home and fixing treats made with our fresh batch of strawberries. I’m not a great cook or baker, but I managed to use one of those instant shortcake mixes to bake homemade shortcakes accompanied with our fresh strawberries.

It was so good! Sorry I didn’t take any great pictures of it but it really was delicious. Especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A lovely treat on a warm, sunny day!
