Why We Cancelled Our Big Wedding and Went to Italy

Italy will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s the country that started my love for travel, but also the reason why we cancelled all of our wedding and plans!

Wedding Planning

When making our wedding plans we originally were going to have a big wedding ceremony and reception with almost up to 150 people, seating charts at the dinner, bridal shower, etc. we were pulling out all the stops.

We even had a dance routine rehearsed for one of our favorite songs from a Bollywood movie! Can you imagine Meshach dancing? It’s very entertaining to watch!

The wedding was going to be a mix of traditional and Indian as a nod to Meshach’s heritage. I was even going to have 3 dress changes!

When things started to get real crazy, Meshach suggested we should just scale things down a bit, but he also knew I wanted a big wedding so he still agreed to give me what I wanted anyway.

An Epiphany

The more we got into planning (particularly when planning for our honeymoon came up) – we found ourselves having more fun planning our honeymoon in Italy and not as excited about all the crazy wedding plans we got ourselves into.

So we decided to use the money we saved up for the wedding and reception and spend it on ourselves.

We cancelled everything – basically going back to square one. Instead, we had a small, simple wedding in a beautiful backyard of a local historic house with about 20 attendees.

Our nephew was our ring bearer, my sister took our photos with Meshach’s Canon 60D, there were no bridesmaids and groomsmen, it was simply us and the minister with close friends and family to witness.

Also, in our true chaotic fashion, I did not walk to the alter – I ran! I can’t remember why though haha

Follow Your Heart

Our reception was a backyard BBQ at our home with our family and close friends (and a Goosebumps DVD marathon!). Our cake was a cute sheet cake picked up from a bakery by one of our friends. Getting married in July, it was one of the hottest days of the year. Not only that – it also rained, then hailed all in that one day!

But we still had way more fun instead of having our big, lavish wedding and reception AND we took that money to spend two glorious weeks in Italy – having one of the greatest cultural experiences of our lives.

We’ve been married for almost 6 years and now with Tristan as our new addition.

Imagine, if we had never cancelled our big wedding and gone to Italy, we may never have caught the travel bug!

So, thank you Meshach for always giving your advice and finding ways to help continue fulfilling my travel dreams – although it has gotten me into some trouble at times with your wallet!

The Moral of the Story

Follow your heart and don’t do things because you feel pressured by others to do it. If you don’t want to spend loads of money on an expensive wedding, car, home, whatever it may be and feel uncomfortable doing it but only following through because it seems like the impressive thing to do – then don’t spend the money.

Besides, it’s your money and you should spend it however way that you want. Because at the end of the day, the others are not going to pay your bills!
